- Institutions change at different speeds. Court collecting, official astronomy, urban signaling, and household time are not one market.
- Older tools remain useful. A sundial can demonstrate solar time even when a mechanical clock is present.
- New clocks absorb older conventions. The watch clock encodes geng rather than erasing it.
- Local making grows around imports. Guangzhou, Suzhou, and palace workshops create their own objects and repair skills.
