Deep night to dawn

Zi · Yeban · 11 p.m.–1 a.m.

The night is centered. Many residents sleep, but the settlement is not inactive. Guards, night-watch workers, court timekeepers, caregivers, travelers, and crews may still be awake. A watch call carries farther because ordinary daytime noise has fallen away.

Chou · Jiming · 1–3 a.m.

“Rooster calls” is an environmental name, not a guaranteed alarm at exactly 1 a.m. Actual animals respond to season, light, and surroundings. In literature, the call signals that deep night has begun to lean toward morning.

Yin · Pingdan · 3–5 a.m.

Dawn approaches. Official timekeepers in one documented medieval system included a performed rooster call among their reports near daybreak. People whose work begins before sunrise may prepare tools, fuel, animals, boats, food, or travel.

Mao · Richu · 5–7 a.m.

Sunrise makes visible activity easier. The exact moment moves with latitude and season; the two-hour conversion is a conventional modern map, not a promise that the Sun rose at the same civil time throughout China.

Morning work and meal time

Chen · Shishi · 7–9 a.m.

Shishi names a meal period. A household meal, institutional ration, roadside food, or worker’s first substantial food need not look alike. The label shows how daily time can be anchored to action rather than a number.

Morning light also supports administrative, craft, agricultural, educational, and market tasks where local schedules permit. Public announcements and gates may shape movement in specific cities, but those rules must be sourced by place and dynasty.

Si · Yuzhong · 9–11 a.m.

The Sun has moved away from the eastern edge of the sky. Work is underway: writing and audiences in an office, field labor outside a settlement, production in a workshop, buying and selling, copying a text, or maintaining an instrument. These are possible roles, not one synchronized national routine.

The Sun crosses the day

Wu · Rizhong · 11 a.m.–1 p.m.

The Sun reaches the center of its daily arc. A sundial makes the relationship between shadow and midday visible. Wei · Ridie · 1–3 p.m.

The Sun declines toward the west. Heat, rain, season, and occupation affect whether this is continued labor, travel, indoor work, rest, or a transition. Traditional day-part language gives a celestial orientation without prescribing one activity.

Afternoon, sunset, and dusk

Shen · Bushi · 3–5 p.m.

Bushi is associated with a late-day meal period. Meal names record rhythms, but frequency and timing depend on resources, household practice, labor, and era. Avoid projecting a modern breakfast-lunch-dinner template backward.

You · Riru · 5–7 p.m.

At sunset, visibility changes and some work concludes or moves indoors. Boats, guards, performers, religious communities, and urban services may follow different evening demands. Seasonal night-watch calculation now becomes relevant.

Xu · Huanghun · 7–9 p.m.

Huanghun is dusk: light fades and the first watch conventionally begins. Lamps and fires create small zones of activity. Public sound becomes more useful than a distant visual marker.

Hai · Rending · 9–11 p.m.

“People settled” describes social quieting. It is not proof that every person went to bed by 9 p.m. Watch workers, officials on duty, entertainment spaces, households, travelers, and emergencies complicate the calm implied by the name.

Rending, “people settled,” is the traditional name associated with Hai. It describes a social tendency, not a universal bedtime.
