Traditional Chinese year names draw from two ordered lists:
- 10 Heavenly Stems, each associated with yin or yang and one of the Five Elements.
- 12 Earthly Branches, each conventionally paired with a zodiac animal.
The first stem pairs with the first branch, the second with the second, and so on. Both lists advance by one each year. Because 10 and 12 realign after 60 steps, the same element-animal pairing returns once every 60 years.
The Hong Kong Observatory describes this stem-branch system, called ganzhi, as a cycle used to record years, days, and other calendrical units (Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches).

To move backward, the same two-year element rhythm continues: 2018–2019 were Earth, 2016–2017 were Fire, 2014–2015 were Wood, and 2012–2013 were Water. But always apply the Lunar New Year boundary before using a Gregorian year label.
What the Five Elements mean
The Chinese term wuxing (五行) is often translated as “Five Elements,” though Five Phases better conveys change and relationship. These are not the same as the four classical elements used in many Western astrology pages.

Why the complete cycle takes 60 years
The mathematics is simple: the least common multiple of 10 stems and 12 branches is 60. But the cultural result is richer than arithmetic. A year can be named with a two-character stem-branch pair, linked to an animal, yin or yang, and a phase.
The five phases do not rotate once per year. Each phase occupies two stems:
